Charles Hedger has been a session and live musician
with Cradle Of Filth for the past several years. He's
formed his own band, Imperial Vengeance, where he does
vocals, guitars and orchestration. The group's full-
length debut is At The Going Down Of The Sun.
Imperial Vengeance blends extreme music with grandiose
orchestration, resulting in songs that are epic,
dynamic and also intense. Black, symphonic and death
metal are some of the genres influencing their sound.
The synths don't just provide atmosphere, they are an
integral part of the compositions. At The Going Down Of
The Sun doesn't forget about the guitars, though.
Tracks such as ôUnto That Endö alternate thrashy guitar
riffs and aggressive drums with airy piano breaks and
majestic orchestration. Hedger's vocals are somewhere
between death metal growls and black metal rasps, which
adds extremity but are also relatively understandable.
Songs like the title track also have some brief melodic
singing.
The lyrical subjects on At The Going Down Of The Sun
are historic in nature, covering British history in the
period from 1873 to 1943. Imperial Vengeance also
recruited World War I veteran Harry Patch to do some
narration for the album. Patch recently passed away at
the age of 111.
The strongest moments on At The Going Down Of The Sun
are when the band is playing at a fast tempo with heavy
guitars, blast beats and the prominence of the
orchestration is a little less. "Cwn Anwnn" has a lot
of those elements, and it one of the strongest tracks
on the album. There are a few lulls, but Imperial
Vengeance generally manages to maintain interest
throughout a compelling album, both from a musical and
lyrical standpoint.
