Do you like █ █ Swedish death metal? I do. And if like me, you're █ █ not adverse to not forward thinking death metal, █ █ you may have heard of the Swedes of Vanhelgd. I █ █ fortunately heard their debut Cult of Lazarus and █ █ while it indeed isn't very forward thinking, it █ █ still doesnÆt sound generic and redundant. Due to █ █ their origin, there is a certain Swedish vibe █ █ going on, but there's more than that. Frankly they █ █ have a sound of their own, it's very old school, █ █ but it shows it was written in 2008. I'd say it's █ █ because the band knows a lot more what they are █ █ doing than the originators. Don't misunderstand me █ █ though, I'm not saying everything the 90's bands █ █ did was unintentional, but in a time where it █ █ seems pretty much everything has been done, it's █ █ easier to pick up what you like from different █ █ genres than trying something new to make a █ █ successful mix or not. Vanhelgd range of sounds is █ █ limited, but straight and powerful, they really █ █ mastered an incredible sound here. █ █ The intro "God is Not Here Today" opens the album. █ █ After a couple of seconds, you soon notice a █ █ melodic yet very dark and foreboding riff, █ █ something quite similar than earlier bands of █ █ their country. It's similar as the influence is █ █ evident, but it's more than copy-paste. Cult of █ █ Lazarus is probably the darkest Swedish death █ █ metal album I've heard, being more akin to the █ █ Finnish in this department, but lacking their █ █ abrasive and ugly in favour of a more... polished █ █ one. The sound, the atmosphere here is incredible. █ █ You could almost think that it could've been █ █ recorded at the same time as their older country █ █ mates, yet has a certain "good sounding" edge to █ █ it. It's pitch black and oppressive, horrific and █ █ everything has an, I'd say, analog sound. The █ █ drums particularly feel as if they were recorded █ █ at an old studio, not sounding digital or over █ █ compressed at all, they have a very authentic █ █ feel. Fortunately, the drummer lives up to such a █ █ sound and keeps off from falling into generic █ █ territory, doing some inventive cymbal play as █ █ well as almost original fills to fit with dreadful █ █ melodies. The vocalist kind of reminds me of Tomas █ █ Lindberg of At The Gates, though as more high █ █ pitched and distressing style. █ █ So back to the song writing, seriously, it is top █ █ notch for its genre. No riff sound rehashed, █ █ effectively going into slower or more mid paced █ █ territory, exploring styles sometimes similar to █ █ early slower Asphyx as well as some punky rhythms █ █ of their "contemporaries" or their more █ █ traditional style. But there is an ever present █ █ sense of bleakness and terror with tons of █ █ brooding melodies scattered around as well as a █ █ certain melodic edge being present to some riffs. █ █ I know I used the work melodic quite often but █ █ don't worry; it's not that much more present than █ █ say, Entombed albums. In fact, Swedish death metal █ █ melodies-wise, the best comparison I could give █ █ would be God Macabre's The Winterlong, though █ █ Vanhelgd riffs are more foreboding. While every █ █ song is killer, first actual track "De Fordomda" █ █ is worthy of mention. It's one of the faster █ █ tracks, having a more "groovy" old school sound █ █ and the almost catchy chorus with the afflicted █ █ vocals makes up for one of the most enjoyable █ █ retro death metal songs. █ █ While Vanhelgd tries nothing new on Cult of █ █ Lazarus, they went beyond the generic retro thrash █ █ band would in its respective genre. They didn't █ █ try to copy a certain band or a particular sound █ █ old school death metal would be known for, but █ █ still used some elements from different bands to █ █ make a sound of their own, one that is among the █ █ darkest of the whole genre. It's not because they █ █ didn't try to blend some outer elements which have █ █ nothing to do with old school death metal that you █ █ shouldn't try to get into the band. If you don't █ █ mind discovering a new death metal band, Cult of █ █ Lazarus is an underground gem you'll want to look █ █ into. █ ▓ ▓ ▒ ▒ ░ 1. God is Not Here Today 1:28 ░ ░ 2.
