| | Here at last is the debut album from curious psych-folk | |
| | supergroup Erland And The Carnival, whose line-up features the | |
| | titular Erland Cooper alongside former Verve guitarist (and The | |
| | Good, The Bad & The Queen member) Simon Tong and drummer/engineer | |
| | David Nock, who's best known for his work alongside Sir Paul | |
| | McCartney on his Fireman project. Previous single 'Trouble In | |
| | Mind' seems to get better with every listen, and you'll no doubt | |
| | be glad to have its melody lodged in your skull for a while The | |
| | band are similarly adept at rendering traditional Scottish and | |
| | English folk tunes in a more contemporary format - updating them | |
| | at least as far as the 1970s. The waltzing fairground feel of | |
| | 'Tramps And Hawkers' works well, as does the excellent opener | |
| | 'Love Is A Killing Thing', and the covers keep on coming, with | |
| | the inclusion of 'My Name Is Carnival', the Jackson C. Frank song | |
| | from which the band derive their name. There's still a wealth of | |
| | original material on offer, but the old folk songs manage to | |
| | bridge a gap between the contemporary pop world and the more | |
| | psychedelic, vehemently old fashioned qualities at play, with | |
| | shades of the old Canterbury scene coming through during the epic | |
| | analogue synth blasts of 'Disturbed This Morning'. Perhaps more | |
| | than anything else, comparisons to The Coral seem to be | |
| | commonplace when talking about this band, and at times the | |
| | similarities are startling - running through the likes of 'You | |
| | Don't Have To Be Lonely' and 'Everything Came Too Easy', but | |
| | between the clever mock-vintage arrangements and Cooper's | |
| | distinctive delivery there's plenty here to distinguish E&TC from | |
| | their British psychedelic pop peers. | |
