If your appetite for Skwee was whetted by last weeks tasty starters from
Limonius and Mangrove on the ace Flogsta dancehall 7"s, prepare yourself for
this week's main course from Harmonia curators Randy Barracuda and Mesak with a
full sized 12" of heavy Skwee fun. Hailing from the chilly hinterlands of
Helsinki, Finland, Randy and Mesak have been running the Harmonia label for just
over two years now, pushing the sound of Skwee alongside Sweden's Flogsta crew
onto their sixth release with an array of killer tracks from the likes of
Wankers United, Slow Hand Motem, Joxaren and Mrs Qaeda. On 'Black vaseline'
Barracuda and Mesak come up with a darkly tinted slow banger strongly reminding
us of Joker's pressurised P-funk synth bursts, but given that Mesak comes from a
much more electro oriented background with releases on Klakson and the like, the
production is detailed as such and sounds like Joker, Rustie or Gemmy's trippy
Skando cousin. Planet Mu's Eero Johannes provides a brilliant reworking of the
track with added synth pad wooze and tightens the beat's screws for a sharper
slowfast effect that's again entirely compatible with the parallel scene here in
the UK. It's Skwee anthem business on the flipside with 'Adult Games' featuring
a pitched up Jamie Lidell style funkers croon from Michael Black Electro over
squashed electro funk backing featuring the pair of producers grimacing with
synthline pleasure as they eak out the cheekiest riffage they can muster. If you
don't fall in love with this record, we can't help you. Tip!!!
