Release Notes:

You would think that the world doesnÆt need another synth-pop band,
right? Wrong: When a debut EP is as good, and as filled with promise,
as æNew ScienceÆ is, then its makers are well worth your time.

Such is the case with St. Paul, Minnesota-based trio CLAPS (YES, UPPER
CASE - itÆs as if they really want to announce their presence to the
world), and they do an excellent job of making the listener think that
itÆs the 1980Æs all over again. Joy Division and Depeche ModeÆs æSpeak
and SpellÆ are easy reference points, though the latterÆs æViolatorÆ
and æSongs of Faith and DevotionÆ-era sound crops up here and there as
well.

Debut single æFoldÆ would also draw comparisons with, say, White Lies,
though CLAPSÆ lead singer relies much less on dramatic vocals (and, it
must be said, lyrics that much too often border on the cringeworthy),
his voice complementing the music instead of overpowering it with
reverb (*cough*).

æGruzzlesÆ (we donÆt get the song title either, just so you knowÆ)
finds the three-piece in more restrained mood. The songÆs beautiful,
dreamy melody and stately 3/8 time-signature give it a fantastic
atmosphere. It sounds almost lullaby-esque in parts, and as the song
drifts away you sense that the band have real depth.

The EP closes with the handclap-laden æFireworksÆ, which showcases a
real knack for a good hook, and lets us know that CLAPS are only just
getting started. Hopefully they wonÆt æburn bright and then fade awayÆ,
as the anthemic songÆs chorus has it - as we absolutely canÆt wait to
hear more.
