Jacarandas 4:08 Runtime: 45:51 min Release.Info : Zimbabwaian Netsayi releases her second album 'Monkey's Wedding' on World Connection Records. Her first album 'Chimurenga Soul' received much praise and her uniqueness and braveness for being herself was respected. Currently Netsayi resides in Bristol, a fitting place for an innovator and pioneer of music. Her obvious comparison to Joan Armatrading is evident and influences of blues soul similar to Nina Simone. Indeed 'Monkey's Wedding' for me was a pleasant surprise. I hadn't heard Netsayi's first album but 'Monkey's Wedding' shows to me that she's a serious artist who isn't compromising or selling out. Provoking lyrics, heartfelt soul and soothing acoustic music makes the listen invigorating and certainly sophisticated. But it's the African influences that that for me makes this album magical. There are lots to it, from pop, to world sounds to jazz inspired vibes and gospel expression, yet it's all very subtle and easy to listen to. Her voice is unique and interesting. In fact this is a women with soul and something to say and tracks delivered with a maturity and uncompromising way. Even the pop elements aren't obvious. I have to say that this is a cool album, for sure. At first listen to 'Monkey's Wedding' I wasn't sure. I thought well you know Tracy Chapman has done this before. But as you listen to the whole album it does flower nicely and for me that's why it's up there as a good original album. It's an album that defines Netsayi as an individual and respectable musician who's created an album that will appeal greatly to a niche and could easily crossover too. So I reckon we'll be seeing a lot more from Netsayi. Nice!
