PLEASE NOTE THAT AT THE REQUEST OF THE LABEL EACH COPY WILL BE PERSONALISED WITH THE CUSTOMERS NAME AND ADDRESS* The second EP on Cotton Goods' Lending Library sub-division, this release from arrives in a pressing of just 100 copies, so as ever, grab one while you can. This twenty-minute, two- part offering comes from Whisperer, the recording alias of Jerusalem-based composer and musician, Emmanuel Witzthum. Drawing on a classical background, Witzthum is equipped to offer an alternate perspective on contemporary ambient music; in that sense his music might be most comparable to that of Kenneth Kirschner, another artist who approaches microsound-style, electronically processed music with classical piano in mind. While Kirschner tends to exhibit a strong Morton Feldman influence, Witzthum's music isn't nearly so minimal or difficult. The EP's second piece, 'Still' is a jazz-inflected piano solo, penned by the Israeli artist and performed by Ju Ping Song. This relatively short track is invitingly easy on the ear yet still manages to come across as resoundingly erudite in terms of its harmonic developments. First track, 'Shimmer' is a more drone- based affair, processing unspecified source sounds (probably piano) into a block of honeyed harmony. Furtive melodic elements seem to be coaxed out of the music via granular synthesis, and the whole mix swells into a spacious, satisfyingly bass-heavy affair. 'Shimmer' is a tremendously enjoyable chunk of ambient drone - chiefly because it feels so intrinsically musical, and moreover, un-drone-like. It also helps that the pieces on this disc are so different from one another. The two approaches are mutually complimentary, yet they reveal an artist who has a broader creative profile than most operators in his field. Lovely stuff, all packaged in the customarily resplendent, hand-crafted fashion we've come to expect from Cotton Goods. http://www.cottongoods.co.uk/ This NFO File was rendered by NFOmation.net
