ôRestricted to percussion, vocals, and the occasional embellishment of

create music with a strong improvisational pulse and so much vitality
is a no small feat, and proves that they are continuing to experiment
in magnificent, dynamic ways.ö Pitchfork

ôThese two return to the most basic elementsùdeep vocals and pounding
rhythmsùto make music that sounds fresh and original but still wholly
humanùFree-form experimentation is rarely this much fun.ö Entertainment

Allow us to introduce you to Wildbirds & PeacedrumsÆ Rivers. Rivers is
a double CD and digital release of two distinctly different, five-song
EPÆs: Retina and Iris. Both are receivers of individually numbered,
limited edition (1,600 copies worldwide each) white vinyl 12ö releases
(The Control Group) ùRetina on May 22 and Iris on June 25. On August 24
both will be released together by the name of Rivers on CD and digital
for the first time via The Control Group.

The release of Rivers coincides with Wildbirds & PeacedrumsÆ recent
performance at ATP, backed by a 12-piece choir. The Swedish duo
renowned for their ecstatic reinvention of gospel, blues and pop,
recently returned from a US tour with St Vincent, and wowed audiences
around the world in 2009.

The ideas contained in the twin EPs were carefully developed by Mariam
Wallentin and her husband, drummer Andreas Werliin: ôAfter touring
pretty much non-stop for two years we wanted to take it back a couple
of steps,ö she says. ôThe emotions are more subtle and dark. And we
wanted to somehow collect these emotions and make them into songs that
are linked all the way, but still very different. The lyrics on both
EPs are connected to one another; the whole idea of the sound is worked
out to build up this special atmosphere.ö

Retina:
Retina comprises five extraordinary new songs, stratospheric in scale
and emotional scope, thematically linked by the idea of water as a
reflection of emotions. The songs were recorded in Iceland in just
three days by Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin, and the 12-strong
Schola Cantorum Reykjavφk Chamber Choir (who also featured on Bj÷rkÆs
Medullaalbum).Retina was recorded in a church, with a deliberately live
sound. ôIt was very special, a modern church with a glass wall behind
the altar,ö Mariam explains. ôBehind the glass was a giant cross
standing in a pool and lit up by green lights, and IÆm sure that
affected the sound.ö The EP features a stellar cast drawn from the
Bedroom Community group, recorded by Australian ΘmigrΘ sound artist and
engineer Ben Frost, mixed by Valgeir Sigur≡sson (Camille, CocoRosie,
Bonnie Prince Billy, etc) and with choral arrangements by Hildur
Gu≡nad≤ttir (who has collaborated with Fever Ray, Throbbing Gristle and
is a member of M·m). Mariam (vocals) and Andreas (drum and percussion)
met Hildur while staying in Berlin and, as fans of her solo work, they
asked her to be involved in the project as choral arranger. It was
through Hildur that the Icelandic connection opened up. ôThe strange,
empty and wet country that is Iceland was perfect for the music, just
as weÆd hoped,ö Miram explains.

Iris:
Completed at the same time, but featuring a completely separate sonic
character, Iris is intrinsically linked to its partner by a common
aquatic theme. Iris was recorded in ReykjavikÆs Greenhouse studios by
Australian ΘmigrΘ sound artist and engineer Ben Frost, and mixed by
Valgeir Sigur≡sson (Camille, Bj÷rk, Bonnie Prince Billy). The five
songs focus on the unique resonant sound of the steel pan û vocalist
Mariam WallentinÆs current musical passion. ôI just love the sound,ö
she says. ôIt has a very distinct tone, but still inviting and warm
with swelling notes. Very alive, and also fun to play. And the idea of
taking something û like a sound or a special instrument û and putting
it in another context is always very exciting.ö Iris further explores
the motifs of water, reflection and surface light with an unusual sonic
texture and production quality. ôItÆs about the eye, the communication
of what we see, and what we feel,ö Mariam explains. ôIÆve been a bit
hung up on the surface of the water versus the surface of the eye, the
reflections and the special light that generates.

The two EPs sound very different û Retina symbolizing the reflection of
light, with a big and wet and dark sound. Iris is more direct and raw û
it has a drier, purer, more intimate sound, with hardly any
embellishment beyond the percussion. ôWe always try to approach songs
with a different energy, and here we felt a need to try to purify it.ö
As always, Wildbirds emphasize instinct, emotional rawness and purity
of expression over perfection û both EPs were recorded and mixed in a
week at the end of January 2010. Iris is complete as it stands, but
heard in conjunction withRetina , the songs are elevated to an
extraordinary body of work. There are really no limits to the reach and
ability of this sublime duo.

Rivers is the Swedish duoÆs third release, returning from 2009Æs
critically acclaimed LP The Snake, the fierce follow up to their
intoxicating debut, Heartcore.
