On his latest studio album, an energized Magic Slim (aka Morris Holt) proves
why heÆs considered the last of the classic Chicago electric bluesmen.
With a direct connection to the post-World War II Chi-Town blues pioneers û
including mentor Magic Sam, who gave him his nickname û the 72 -year-old
Mississippi native upholds traditional raw, visceral electric blues.
The record finds Slim shooting out barbed, jagged guitar leads and riffs while
his no-holds-barred backing band adds unrelenting, pumping rhythms. Slim adds
lusty, slurring vocals occasionally enlivened by a HowlinÆ Wolf guttural growl.
There are no harmonies, no ballads, no keyboards, and no guest musicians and
singers. ItÆs just raw, unadulterated Slim and his ÆDrops wringing every ounce
of sweat and emotion out of a few originals and covers by J.B. Lenoir, Elmore
James, Little Milton and Roosevelt Sykes.
On this record, Magic Slim not only raises the blues bar, he and his boys leap
