- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -

"The Sleeping formed in 2003, on Long Island, NY from the ashes of metalcore
band, Skycamefalling. After auditioning twenty-two potential singers, they
came across Doug Robinson, former singer/guitarist of the band Stillwelle.
The band began touring soon after on a self-titled, self-recorded, 3-song
demo, which sold 1,000 copies. In 2004, The Sleeping signed to a small,
independent label and released their first album, Believe What We Tell You
and became a full-time touring band. During 2004 and 2005, they toured with
Taking Back Sunday, Brandston, Action Action and many more. Soon after, the
band signed to Victory Records. They also became very close with rock
heavyweights, Bayside. On October 15th, 2005 at approximately 3:13AM,
BaysideÆs vehicle hit a patch of ice, skidded off the road, and flipped over.
Drummer John ôBeatzö Holohan was killed and Bayside bassist Nick Ghanbarian
was seriously injured. On May 26th, 2006, The Sleeping released their
sophomore album, Questions And Answers, a tribute to their lost friend Beatz.
On August 6, 2008 the band announced that after 6 months of auditioning for a
new pianist/guitarist to replace Cameron Keym, they had recruited Paul Cadena
and Christopher Evans, the newest members of The Sleeping. What It Takes was
released a year later in 2009 and peaked at #20 on the Top Heatseekers chart.
Via a MySpace blog on July 31st, 2010, the band announced the title name and
release date for their next album, The Big Deep. The band spent two summer
months approaching a style of writing that theyÆve rarely explored; The
Sleeping packed up and headed to Woodstock, New York to record the new album
with producers Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner. ôWe experienced Woodstock
in a tourist world. I would wake up every morning and feed chickens, hens and
a 1000 pound pigö claims Douglas.

The SleepingÆs fourth studio album, The Big Deep, is a big step up from their
2008 release, What It Takes. The album still has that sobering, mature feel
to it that is in every Sleeping record but, at the same time has a different
sound weaved into it. The only way I can describe it as, is alt rock. The
keyboarding in this record is particularly good and the band incorporates
some orchestral instruments into a few songs.

The opening track is ôDark Days.ö This song begins with the distortion of an
electric guitar before the song really gets going. The drumming in this song
is good but, seems a bit watered down. This fits in nicely however with the
mood of the song. Around the middle of the song, the tempo drops back down
with an eerie ôwah-wah-ingö of an electric guitar, follow by more guitar
   distortion. Perfect album opener!

Personally, my favorite two songs off of this record areôBeautiful Gloomö and
ôGet You Back.ö ôBeautiful Gloomö is filled with very new age rock-esque
guitar riffs, with a peppering of reggae throughout the song. ôGet You Backö
begins with jazzy-sounding drums before lead singer Doug Robinson enters
bigger than ever with the catchy chorus line, ôI wanna get you back but, I
donÆt know how.ö Anyone that has ever been in a relationship that has fallen
through the cracks unexpectedly will be able to relate to this song.

Two other noteworthy songs are ôThe Phantom Of Dark Cloudsö and ôOh, Gloria.ö
ôThe Phantom Of Dark Cloudsö is something I have never heard on a Sleeping
record before. With this song, the only way I can describe it as, would be an
old black and white 40Æs romance movie. In the beginning you can picture
looking through a coffee shop window and seeing an attractive women sitting
at the bar, coolly puffing a cigarette and waiting for the cookie-cutter,
handsome business man to walk through the door. I really love how they did
this song. It is slow but, is very alive in its own respect. This song would
make a perfect music video! (cough-cough) With ôOh, Gloria,ö the band decided
to bring back some of the old vocal styles from Questions And Answers and it
sounds great. This song would be the almost alt rock sound I was talking
   about earlier.

Alright, now to a reviewerÆs most hated part of a music review (by trying to
avoid repetition), the summary. The SleepingÆs latest album, The Big Deep, is
a big sigh of relief for us fans. In todayÆs music world, a lot of bands have
switched (or completely changed) their sound to conform to a certain genre or
because of what the label wants. Neither however, is the case here. The Big
Deep contains that same great Sleeping sound weÆve all come to love and also
has some new tricks up its sleeve. It is in my opinion, the perfect follow up
   to What It Takes.

The Big Deep drops September 28th on Victory Records. Be sure to pick up a
   copy and support these guys!"
