Darrell Nulisch has a rare, powerful voice that can belt out gritty blues and
deliver smooth R&B/soul. Nulisch showed promise early in his career singing for
Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Mike Morgan & the Crawl, and Ronnie Earl & the
Broadcasters. Since the early '90s, he's been the frontman and on this, his
sixth solo effort, he once again teams with songwriter and ace bassist Steve
Gomes to produce a soul/blues masterpiece. Backed by the Severn Records house
band featuring Gomes, Benjie Porecki on keys, Robb Stupka on drums, Johnny
Mueller on guitar and the full horn section arrangements by Willie Henderson,
he delivers a modern day Stax sound. Is Severn the new Stax?
The Gomes-Nulisch duo wrote six of the dozen songs here and Darrell comments,
"Steve always seems to write lyrics I really believe inàHe's also opened me up
to different kinds of music, like reggae and jazz, which have influenced my
phrasing and tone." On his tunes and scintillating covers of Slim Harpo's "Just
for You," "The Woman Don't Live Here No More" (recorded by Otis Clay), and
"Work for Love," (originally recorded by label mate Lou Pride who lends his
background vocals on the album), Nulisch mines not only Memphis soul, but
southern and Texas blues, and even traces of Motown pop. Don't mistake this for
a retro sound, however. This is as fresh and vibrant as any record this year
and is a major tour-de-force for Nulisch.
