 NOTES

Following on from the Uncle Funkenstein reissue, Jazzman continue in their
Holy Grail Series with this second album by Milton Wright, recorded in 1977.
As is a prerequisite of qualifying for the 'Holy Grail' tag, copies of the
original Spaced LP are as few and far between as they come, with most copies
being destroyed in a warehouse fire, as so often seems to be the case with
these things. The liner notes harbour interviews and photos of Wright,
shedding a certain amount of light on this most unjustly obscure of figures
within the '70s soul scene. According to the Jazzman blurb, the original
release of Spaced was overshadowed by the success of labelmates KC & The
Sunshine Band, but in subsequent years collectors have generated sufficient
belated hype to mean that you'd supposedly be looking at around $1000 to pick
up a copy - up until now, that is. This deserving re-release reveals a
considerable talent, and Wright proves himself both as an accomplished
songwriter and as a singer. In addition to urgent, horn-saturated uptempo
numbers like 'Dance Have Fun', Brown dispenses some great soul balladry on
'All I Know Is I Have You' and 'Leave Me Alone', which benefit from beautiful
string arrangements while preserving a tight rhythm section - you'll even get
a bit of Biblical funk come the end of the album thanks to the unforseeably
 brilliant 'Job'. Good stuff.
