Hailing from north-western Germany, or the Lower Saxony
region for the more historically accurate amongst us, My
Inner Burning were formed in mid-2008. Guitarist, Torsten
Sauerbrey and drummer, Niklas Kahl recorded the first demo
pleasantly titled æFuck You All', under the band name The
Core. They quickly recruited a bassist and second
guitarist/shouter, Daniel Pietrzak and Joerg Janssen, but
found it much more difficult to find their ideal singer.
After discovering flamboyant front-woman, Becky Gaber, and
therefore completing the line-up, they toured with songs
from the demo throughout Germany before deciding on a name
change to My Inner Burning. Their self-titled dΘbut was
released in winter 2009 and now under their new label, SPV
/ Steamhammer Records, they are releasing follow-up
'Eleven Scars' at the end of March.

With the history out of the way, let's focus on the
eleven-tracks that make up the gothic-metal foundation of
Eleven Scars. Despite denying that it's a concept album,
the number of tracks isn't exactly a coincidence. They are
apparently eleven different stories / accounts about love,
friendship and all that's in between, but then what album
isn't really? Opening track "Masquerade" is a strong way
to start the tale, with crunchy down-tuned guitars and
beefy double-kick drum intervals. The chorus particularly
shows off Becky's precise and powerful vibrato, "I'm
dancing in a masquerade, I've gotta find my way through
the darkness, we create until the light of day!" It's a
very catchy tune, blending the heavy riffs with the
melodic vocals well, albeit a little female-fronted-metal
by numbers.

With the rising number of female-led metal bands,
particularly European ones, it's hard not to make
comparisons to say Nightwish, Within Temptation or the
lesser-known Epica. And My Inner Burning don't
unfortunately seem to break the stereotype. There are some
strong stand-out tracks like the electronic-tinged
"Electrified" and the brutal-riff filled "Demons", that
both show off the high musical skill amongst the group,
particularly the tight-rhythmic duelling between the
guitarists. However despite this, overall it's still a
pretty predictable and clichΘd sound. My one main gripe as
far as the member's roles would be Joerg's sporadic
monster-esque shouts/growls, which aren't always necessary
and sometimes a little off-putting. It ruins some of the
track's regal and operatic atmospheres, like a member of
GWAR barging in and projectile vomiting at a formal
dinner-party (although that would be fun to see!)

"When I'm Gone" is the most interesting and dynamic track.
Demonstrating the album's first change in pace and mood,
it slows things down with radio-friendly (but not cheesy)
guitar arpeggios and gentle but clever drum work. Becky's
tortured, echoed vocals shine through especially; a little
fragile and reluctant in the verses before soaring to
emotional heights through the chorus lines. The story here
is of a broken friendship, "break down the walls and wash
away what was" pleads Becky. It's a track akin to
Evanescence's "My Immortal" with tender moments both
musically and lyrically; although it is a bit of an
ambitious comparison, considering the worldwide popularity
of the Grammy Award winners. But this is definitely a
highlight of "Eleven Scars" and shows their most potential.

Even with the occasional unique moments, played from start
to finish, the album does start sounding too similar. For
every punchy and raw "Enemy Of Mine", there are tracks
like "New Breed" which I'm sure I heard earlier on. As I
mentioned before, there's no denying the skill of the
musicians and the production is top quality; highlighting
each member with equal measure. It's just that it's
nothing too original; nothing I haven't heard before.
Their confidence in their music is admirable and I'm sure
they will continue to entertain European crowds in their
masses. However, if they wish to please say our neighbours
across the seas...then My Inner Burning will need to
channel that inner burning into something unexpected and
distinctive to challenge the already brimming world of
female-fronted gothic and symphonic metal.
