The drummer Billy Hart is among one of ████ ████ the most accomplished contemporary jazz ████ ████ drummers in the world. Along with his ████ ████ recordings as band leader Hart, who celebrated ████ ████ his 70th birthday in 2010, can be heard ████ ████ drumming on more than 600 albums. Among other ████ ████ groups he was a long running member of the ████ ████ Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz bands. Hart was ████ ████ highly involved with the composition and ████ ████ arrangements on La Place Demon. The permanent ████ ████ members of the Tied & Tickled Trio also ████ ████ occupied themselves intensively with Billy ████ ████ Harts music prior to and during the ████ ████ composition of the album. Over the course of ████ ████ his discography he has covered everything from ████ ████ spiritual jazz to free music and electronic ████ ████ music. This album charts this development in ████ ████ broad strokes and as such is something like a ████ ████ biographical album. Even in harmonically and ████ ████ rhythmically simple passages one senses the ████ ████ abyss which surrounds these temporary islands ████ ████ of order. Something seems to warn us that the ████ ████ apparent clarity is nothing more than ████ ████ ambiguity and that this order can at any ████ ████ moment descend into freedom and chaos. ████ ████ Everything is always in limbo, light and ████ ████ feathery, but at the same time unfathomable. A ████ ████ flurry of trills on the flute and thin yet ████ ████ threatening string parts see to it that any ████ ████ feeling of homely comfort is left behind. Out ████ ████ of this abstract sound-scape, driven by dark ████ ████ percussion and electronic effects comes a ████ ████ masterfully arranged piece of chamber music. ████ ████ Woodwind instruments in part manipulated with ████ ████ effects and strings interweave to form quietly ████ ████ pacing figures. One could relax in this ████ ████ sound-scenery, if not for those nervously ████ ████ beating drums. In the end the chamber music ████ ████ descends into a whirlpool of free-jazz, ████ ████ dominated by drums and saxophone. Often ████ ████ sounding cinematic, tension is indeed built up ████ ████ in the way that soundtracks do. Although with ████ ████ Tied & Ticked Trio this tension might suddenly ████ ████ turn into a slow bebop riff. In which case ████ ████ there is an all-pervading atmosphere of ████ ████ coolness, like in a 70s detective film. We ████ ████ hear bold and moving harmonies with a seamless ████ ████ group improvisation over the top. Or ████ ████ threatening expanses with no rhythmic pulse, ████ ████ which after seven minutes mutates into a cool ████ ████ slow-motion groove. And complex fugue-like ████ ████ structures with clear melodies in swing-time ████ ████ played on brass, strings and glockenspiel. One ████ ████ constantly has a sense that these are ████ ████ musicians so masterful that they no longer ████ ████ need to prove anything either to each other or ████ ████ anyone else. The core members of the ôTrioö ████ ████ are Markus and Micha Acher, the drummer Casper ████ ████ Brandner as well as the visual artist and ████ ████ electronic musician Andreas Gerth. There are ████ ████ also compositions by Johannes Enders and Carl ████ ████ Oesterhelt, who recently released their ████ ████ wonderful album äDivertimento fⁿr ████ ████ Tenorsaxophon und kleines Ensembleô on Alien ████ ████ Transistor. Every ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ one of their projects, be it The Notwist, ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ 13&God or Tied & Tickled Trio has grown to ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ become a working cosmos each of its own while ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ remaining open on all sides. Their new album ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ comes thanks to their preference for creative ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ collaborations as Tied & Tickled Trio have ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ really had a thrilling artistic liaison this ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ time. The drummer Billy Hart is among one of ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ the most accomplished contemporary jazz ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ drummers in the world. Along with his ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ recordings as band leader Hart, who celebrated ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ his 70th birthday in 2010, can be heard ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ drumming on more than 600 albums. Among other ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ groups he was a long running member of the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz bands. Hart was ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ highly involved with the composition and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ arrangements on La Place Demon. The permanent ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ members of the Tied & Tickled Trio also ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ occupied themselves intensively with Billy ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Harts music prior to and during the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ composition of the album. Over the course of ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ his discography he has covered everything from ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ spiritual jazz to free music and electronic ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ music. This album charts this development in ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ broad strokes and as such is something like a ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ biographical album. The Tied & Tickled Trio ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ play jazz music from an indie perspective and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ so are by definition not afraid of contact. ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Its amazing that a project which practically ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ has a new approach for every composition can ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ still have a unified sound. And the guys from ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Weilheim have an instantly recognisable sound ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ - regardless whether their playing crazy free ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ jazz, static drones or complex patterns. ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Perhaps it's something to do with their love ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ of wood-wind and rather melancholy harmonies, ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ which one knows well from The Notwist. La ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Place Demon never gives us too much of a sense ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ of security. Even in harmonically and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ rhythmically simple passages one senses the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ abyss which surrounds these temporary islands ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ of order. Something seems to warn us that the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ apparent clarity is nothing more than ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ambiguity and that this order can at any ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ moment descend into freedom and chaos. ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Everything is always in limbo, light and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ feathery, but at the same time unfathomable. A ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ flurry of trills on the flute and thin yet ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ threatening string parts see to it that any ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ feeling of homely comfort is left behind. Out ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ of this abstract sound-scape, driven by dark ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ percussion and electronic effects comes a ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ masterfully arranged piece of chamber music. ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Woodwind instruments in part manipulated with ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ effects and strings interweave to form quietly ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ pacing figures. One could relax in this ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ sound-scenery, if not for those nervously ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ beating drums. In the end the chamber music ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ descends into a whirlpool of free-jazz, ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ dominated by drums and saxophone. Often ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ sounding cinematic, tension is indeed built up ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ in the way that soundtracks do. Although with ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Tied & Ticked Trio this tension might suddenly ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ turn into a slow bebop riff. In which case ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ there is an all-pervading atmosphere of ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ coolness, like in a 70s detective film. We ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ hear bold and moving harmonies with a seamless ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ group improvisation over the top. Or ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ threatening expanses with no rhythmic pulse, ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ which after seven minutes mutates into a cool ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ slow-motion groove. And complex fugue-like ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ structures with clear melodies in swing-time ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ played on brass, strings and glockenspiel. One ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ constantly has a sense that these are ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ musicians so masterful that they no longer ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ need to prove anything either to each other or ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ anyone else. The core members of the Trio ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ are Markus and Micha Acher, the drummer Casper ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Brandner as well as the visual artist and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ electronic musician Andreas Gerth. There are ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ also compositions by Johannes Enders and Carl ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Oesterhelt, who recently released their ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ wonderful album Divertimento für ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Tenorsaxophon und kleines Ensemble on Alien ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Transistor. In total 14 musicians have worked ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ on La Place Demon. For their studio work the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ensemble have done without any spectacular ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ effects. Nothing is overloaded, nobody is ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ playing in the foreground. No particular ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ musical event really has to happen as the ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ players have just taken their time. The pieces ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ unfold themselves with a pleasant calmness and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ all the parts simply fall into place, as if by ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ their own accord. At the same time this album ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ is so multifaceted and diverse that even ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ within a single piece, one really never knows ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ quite what to expect. Of course Tied & Tickled ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Trio follow a classic pattern of theme and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ variation. But their DIY jazz is neither ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ markedly eclectic nor does it depend on ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ music-historical references. Tied & Tickled ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Trio were founded in 1994 by Markus Acher and ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Casper Brandner, at the time purely as a ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ drumming duo.
