█ █▓ the European Union nearly two █▓ █
█ █▓ decades ago, travel abroad meant █▓ █
█ █▓ that a vast variety (27) of █▓ █
█ █▓ currencies had to be converted to █▓ █
█ █▓ complete a transaction. American █▓ █
█ █▓ music was prevalent across the █▓ █
█ █▓ European continent as far back as █▓ █
█ █▓ the sixties. However, in order to █▓ █
█ █▓ insure that fans of American music █▓ █
█ █▓ could fully appreciate what they █▓ █
█ █▓ were listening to, labels would █▓ █
█ █▓ request that artists record their █▓ █
█ █▓ hits in various languages per █▓ █
█ █▓ corresponding countries. Motown █▓ █
█ █▓ wisely seized and capitalized on █▓ █
█ █▓ this marketing strategy to expand █▓ █
█ █▓ its global market share. Not only █▓ █
█ █▓ did the Hitsville roster tour █▓ █
█ █▓ Europe a couple of times in the █▓ █
█ █▓ early æ60s, they also made sure █▓ █
█ █▓ that their core artist roster █▓ █
█ █▓ (including The Supremes, Stevie █▓ █
█ █▓ Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc.), █▓ █
█ █▓ simultaneously broke in global and █▓ █
█ █▓ domestic territories alike. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ It is unclear if the recordings in █▓ █
█ █▓ native tongues were the catalyst to █▓ █
█ █▓ making those songs hits abroad, as █▓ █
█ █▓ the charts list only the English █▓ █
█ █▓ title. However, if Motown relied on █▓ █
█ █▓ the native language versions of the █▓ █
█ █▓ majority of these songs to be hits, █▓ █
█ █▓ they must have been in for a rude █▓ █
█ █▓ awakening. This collection is █▓ █
█ █▓ primarily for serious collectors of █▓ █
█ █▓ the Motown sound. I doubt, █▓ █
█ █▓ seriously, that if these songs had █▓ █
█ █▓ to stand on their translated merit, █▓ █
█ █▓ few, if any, would have become hits █▓ █
█ █▓ in those foreign countries. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ I am fairly proficient in Spanish █▓ █
█ █▓ but my assessment of enunciations █▓ █
█ █▓ and phrasing is limited in the █▓ █
█ █▓ other languages. The Italian █▓ █
█ █▓ versions of The SupremesÆ ôYou █▓ █
█ █▓ CanÆt Hurry Loveö and The Four █▓ █
█ █▓ TopsÆ ôI CanÆt Help Myselfö are the █▓ █
█ █▓ best of the lot translated in that █▓ █
█ █▓ language. The quality of the songs █▓ █
█ █▓ and the translations range from █▓ █
█ █▓ good (see the previously mentioned █▓ █
█ █▓ titles) to near laughable on The █▓ █
█ █▓ MiraclesÆ ôCome Around Hereö and █▓ █
█ █▓ The SupremesÆ ôYou Keep Me HanginÆ █▓ █
█ █▓ Onö. It is almost evident which █▓ █
█ █▓ artists are struggling to sing the █▓ █
█ █▓ songs phonetically and the few that █▓ █
█ █▓ successfully capture the magic of █▓ █
█ █▓ the songs in another language. █▓ █

█ █▓ For some reason, I thought Stevie █▓ █
█ █▓ Wonder would be one of the better █▓ █
█ █▓ translators. Perhaps due to his █▓ █
█ █▓ touches of Spanish on ôNgiculela-Es █▓ █
█ █▓ Una Historiaö from Songs in the Key █▓ █
█ █▓ of Life, Portugese on ôBird of █▓ █
█ █▓ Beautyö from Fullingness First █▓ █
█ █▓ Finale and even ôMy Cherie Amourö, █▓ █
█ █▓ where you may have expected him to █▓ █
█ █▓ be engaging, he comes off sounding █▓ █
█ █▓ detached and slightly off key. █▓ █
█ █▓ David Ruffin also fails to capture █▓ █
█ █▓ the magic of ôMy Girlö in either █▓ █
█ █▓ Italian or German. The Supremes █▓ █
█ █▓ sound like they believe what they █▓ █
█ █▓ are singing on ôMoonlight and █▓ █
█ █▓ Kissesö, but, then fall flat in █▓ █
█ █▓ German on ôThank You Darlingö. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ Though none of the artists takes a █▓ █
█ █▓ given song to another level, █▓ █
█ █▓ confidence comes across on Jermaine █▓ █
█ █▓ JacksonÆs Spanish translation of █▓ █
█ █▓ ôLetÆs Get Seriousö and Smokey █▓ █
█ █▓ RobinsonÆs ôBeing With Youö. Smokey █▓ █
█ █▓ has recorded Spanish versions of █▓ █
█ █▓ several of his late æ70s and early █▓ █
█ █▓ æ80s hits so he may be the most █▓ █
█ █▓ comfortable singing in that █▓ █
█ █▓ language. I recall when a friend of █▓ █
█ █▓ mine first returned from one of her █▓ █
█ █▓ many adventures abroad, she would █▓ █
█ █▓ bring home albums by Julio Iglesias █▓ █
█ █▓ in several different languages. It █▓ █
█ █▓ was always fascinating to compare █▓ █
█ █▓ his proficiency in so many █▓ █
█ █▓ languages. Europeans, █▓ █
█ █▓ traditionally, are conversant in at █▓ █
█ █▓ least one or two more languages in █▓ █
█ █▓ addition to their native tongues. █▓ █
█ █▓ It is unfortunate that the █▓ █
█ █▓ once-required 2 years of foreign █▓ █
█ █▓ language study in order to graduate █▓ █
█ █▓ from college (or some progressive █▓ █
█ █▓ high schools) has now faded away. █▓ █
█ █▓ While English is certainly the █▓ █
█ █▓ accepted language of business, the █▓ █
█ █▓ ever-shrinking world we live in, █▓ █
█ █▓ dictates that we will, as █▓ █
█ █▓ Americans, interact with even more █▓ █
█ █▓ different cultures in the coming █▓ █
█ █▓ years. That puts many Americans at █▓ █
█ █▓ a clear disadvantage. █▓ █
█ █▓ █▓ █
█ █▓ It is admirable that Motown had the █▓ █
█ █▓ foresight to, at least, attempt to █▓ █
█ █▓ record translated versions of some █▓ █
█ █▓ of their biggest hits, no matter █▓ █
█ █▓ the end result. MotownÆs premiere █▓ █
█ █▓ artists from Stevie Wonder to Diana █▓ █
█ █▓ Ross to The Jackson 5 to The █▓ █
█ █▓ Supremes to Lionel Richie have all █▓ █
█ █▓ experienced a great deal of success █▓ █
█ █▓ in Europe, South America and Asia. █▓ █
█ █▓ It is yet another testament to the █▓ █
█ █▓ brilliance of Berry GordyÆs █▓ █
█ █▓ marketing acumen. With █▓ █
█ █▓ international sales now accounting █▓ █
█ █▓ for anywhere from 30% to 35% in █▓ █
█ █▓ aggregate, Mr. Gordy understood █▓ █
█ █▓ early on what this could mean to █▓ █
█ █▓ the global dominance of Motown █▓ █
█ █▓ artists/stars. Motown Around the █▓ █
█ █▓ World is documented proof of his █▓ █
█ █▓ genius. So lovers of Motown should █▓ █
█ █▓ have a little fun and challenge █▓ █
█ █▓ themselves to learn some of their █▓ █
█ █▓ favorite songs in another language. █▓ █
█ █▓ There is nothing to lose and quite █▓ █
█ █▓ a bit to gain in taking that █▓ █
