Til I Do It Again 3:24 Release Notes: -------- Will Hoge is a name regularly heard when talking about the Nashville country music scene and for good reason. With co-penned hits such as æEven If It Breaks Your HeartÆ and æBetter Off Now (That YouÆre Gone)Æ having been cut by Eli Young Band and Lady Antebellum respectively, along with a well-deserved Grammy nomination and years of experience under his belt, itÆs easy to see why WillÆs upcoming album is so anticipated. The album kicks off with the track æGrowing Up Around HereÆ, a song which has an undeniable authenticity in its delivery and really speaks true to the artist that Will Hoge is. This song as well as many of the other tracks on the album features a prominent piano track which compliments the song perfectly and itÆs nice to hear as the bulk of country music is held together with strong guitar parts. The first track is followed by some great offerings like æBetter Than YouÆ, which I can imagine would be a fantastic live song. With a repetitive chorus and catchy melody to match, it doesnÆt take a lot for it to get stuck in your head! It features a strong drum track all the way through keeping the momentum going from start to finish. Also, unlike many of the others æBetter Than youÆ features little piano, bringing the raw sound of the lead guitar and percussion to the front line. æLittle Bitty DreamsÆ follows, with what sounds like a one-take approach. A song completely stripped-back with just guitar, vocals, a little slide and a soft snare, this is all about the lyrics. The music and melody perfectly capture the story of two peopleÆs dreams changing and becoming one and the same. ItÆs the sort of song that enables you to close your eyes and picture the story playing out before you as WillÆs vocals are complimented perfectly bringing a true country song to life. Track five, æGuitar Or A GunÆ, is my favorite song on the album by a country mile! The strong yet not overpowering introductory guitar riff makes you sit up and listen the second the song starts. Talking about the choice of a young man between a guitar and a gun with the line: æOne of these will last forever and the otherÆs just for fun. One can feed your family and oneÆll end you up in jail. And he said youÆll know which one is which û but me I couldnÆt tellÆ. It talks in depth about both items, both made from wood and metal and compares them in other ways which not only describe their differences but also the likeness between the two. When standing at the crossroads will you choose to be a rockstar or an outlaw. The electric guitar part in the song is composed to give a western cowboy feel throughout and it is finished off with an extended fading note creating a clever ending. Then on to æMiddle Of AmericaÆ, another patriotic country song about the love of the United States, and a solid track with a sound reminiscent to something Kenny Chesney would record. æAll I Want Is Us TonightÆ is the seventh track on the album and displays a much rockier, rather than country, side of Will Hoge, with vocals almost dropping to a sort of rap. Unfortunately it is repetitive and I donÆt feel like this song does justice for such a talented artist. The repetitive lyrics leave you wondering whether there ever was anything else in the song and there is an extremely abrupt ending to the track. ItÆs definitely a change of scenery to the rest of the songs on the album with it feeling considerably more produced than others, however I can see how this would be a great live track. æJust Up The RoadÆ makes you forget about the previous one, giving you what feels like a much more authentic Will. Showcasing his vocals and musicianship, with a strong guitar riff through the chorus and well written lyrics, this is, in my opinion, one of the strongest songs on the album. I did however feel at times the vocals got a little lost behind the music and I would love to hear a more stripped-back version of this track. æDesperate TimesÆ delivers a distorted electric guitar coupled with piano occasionally reminiscent of Phil Vassar. This track has much more of a southern rock feel to it with WillÆs vocals having much more of a rockier style. This song is quickly proceeded by a nice country/bluesy track with æThe Last Thing I NeededÆ. The tempo is dropped from the previous track and the acoustic guitar that runs through much of the album is brought back, once again delivering the raw element felt in the first track æGrowing Up Around HereÆ. The album is finished off with æTil I Do It AgainÆ, just another drinking songà. Will Hoge style! It has an intro which could be starting off a Brad Paisley tune with the music feeling much more country again. ItÆs a strong track with a catchy melody and lyrics and a great way to finish off what is a solid album. This is the song you want to hear when you have a beer in your hand out on a Saturday night! All the experience Will has working with various artists over the years is clearly noticeable in this album with many tracks blurring the lines between country/blues/rock. His writing and musicality has created a diverse album that anyone would be proud of, and has managed to show every element of his musical personality and stay true to the artist people know. These may be Will HogeÆs æSmall Town DreamsÆ but he knows just how to make them everyone elseÆs too, and if thatÆs not a sign of true artistry I donÆt know what is.
